In UP and Bihar, 1 bigha = 3,025 gaj. In West Bengal it is 1,600 gaj.
What is the difference between marla and kanal?
1 kanal = 20 marla. One marla is 272.25 sq ft (30.25 gaj), so one kanal is 5,445 sq ft. Some urban authorities use a smaller marla of 225 sq ft, so check your document.
Which unit do land registries use?
Most state land records now also show area in square metres or hectares. When in doubt, compare your figure with the area in square metres on the registry papers.
